Paper Textures that Create Impact

There’s no denying that at the heart of paper’s allure is its tactility. The feel of a texture delights the fingertips, sets a tone and enhances a design. In fact, neuroscience has found that the power of touch is so strong that it can shape perceptions, influence purchasing and increase memory recall. There are many textures available ranging from subtle to pronounced; sophisticated to rough hewn; scratchy to rubbery soft. To make finding that perfect texture a little easier, we put together a list of uncoated finishes and paper grade names. Neenah Wild

Wild is another paper born from the partnership between Neenah and Gruppo Cordenons. It may seem simple enough at first glance, but wait until you get your hands on it. Wild contains 35% cotton giving it a wonderfully soft and luxurious touch to the hand with its heavy vellum finish (heavy meaning it’s more “vellum-y” than a regular vellum finish….so expect lots of tooth to this paper).  It is also super bulky…..really, really bulky. Here’s a comparison of its caliper to another Neenah cotton sheet, Canaletto – Canaletto 111# cover mics to 18 point while Wild 111# cover mics to 27 points. Both papers weigh the same, but the Wild is “puffed up” and thicker.

Speaking of weights, Wild is available in 101# text and 111#, 166# and an extremely thick 314# cover which mics out to 78 point.  All weights are suitable for offset printing except for the 314# cover so this bulky boy will need to be letterpressed, blind embossed, engraved or foil stamped.

Neenah Starwhite

Starwhite earned its reputation for its superior surface and print performance. It delivers crisp dot reproduction and exceptional ink holdout making it a true and reliable workhorse. Available in 4 shades of white ranging from bright white to soft natural, Starwhite allows you to choose the tone that best compliments your desired printing results. (Remember, the shade of white of the paper will always influence the ink printed. Bright whites provide clean, crisp color full of contrast and naturals will soften and skew colors to the yellow side.) Available finishes include smooth, vellum and hi-tech (micro-embossed lines you can feel with your finger tips). The new Orion Astrosilver, a single sided mica-coated, embossed surface, joins 4 flash colors in a pearlescent sheen and all provide a sparkling luminescence to your printed images. The Soft Touch finish has been discontinued, but you can look at Neenah Plike as an alternative.

Canaletto is another new addition to the Neenah Design Collection and you will love the way this paper feels to the touch due to it’s 20% cotton content. It’s soft, plush, and luxurious. Anything you print on this paper is instantly elevated to the category of quality simply through the power of paper’s tactility. It’s amazing, the signals sent to our brains when you hold something in your hand that just feels good. We react to touch. We have an emotional response.
